Ocean Shipping Highlighted as Key to Sustainable Global Supply Chains at UN Transport Initiative

At the recent United Nations launch of the Decade of Sustainable Transport, ocean shipping was highlighted as a critical pillar in reducing global supply chain emissions. The World Shipping Council (WSC) joined international policymakers and transport leaders to emphasize the essential role of maritime transport in building a more sustainable global logistics system.

While public discussions around sustainable transport often focus on visible sectors such as urban mobility and electric vehicles, ocean shipping remains one of the most climate-efficient freight modes, transporting nearly 80% of global trade worldwide. Despite being labeled a “hard-to-abate” sector, shipping offers significant potential for emissions reduction at scale.

During the UN event, WSC President and CEO Joe Kramek stressed that the energy transition in ocean shipping represents a major opportunity for countries and industries to invest in renewable marine fuels, port infrastructure, and low-emission technologies. He also highlighted the importance of fully integrating the maritime leg of global supply chains into international sustainability frameworks.

According to WSC, liner shipping companies have already committed approximately USD 150 billion to build more than 1,000 dual-fuel vessels by 2030, capable of operating on low- and zero-greenhouse-gas fuels. These investments signal a strong shift toward decarbonisation across the global shipping industry.

In addition, WSC emphasized the importance of effective and globally aligned greenhouse gas regulations under the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Consistent international standards will be essential to ensure that sustainability efforts in ocean shipping are both practical and impactful.
